Lilac-Breasted Roller Birds
Acrylic on canvas 12" x 16" (30 x 40 cm)
I am fascinated by the amazing variety and spectacular colours of birds around the world. It is as if mother nature hand-painted each one of them. Lilac-breasted Roller birds live in sub-Saharan Africa. Both males and females are similarly coloured and are about the size of crows. Their name comes from their dramatic courtship flights, which are quite acrobatic, with fast high-diving and rolling, including a side to side rocking motion. They prefer to perch high, on well-spaced tree tops to survey their prey in bushy game lands. They do not live in areas of human habitation which is of importance in their preservation and the conservation of their natural habitat.
