Often there is much more that can be said about a particular subject than what is possible to express in one painting. While one painting can and should effectively tell a story, a series of paintings may be able to demonstrate a book of related stories, so to speak. It is possible to tell a more intimate and comprehensive story with different facets. One way to make a more complex statement or tell more stories about a subject, is to do a series of similar paintings that share a theme. This potentially would have the power to give the viewer more to see and more to think about on a certain topic
The first thing to do is to ask myself what I would like to say about my subject: define the theme, in other words. The next step is to clearly develop this theme, either in my mind or on paper, which would make it easier to stay focused and ensure a coherent message. It is a similar process to breaking a written story down into chapters. Each chapter would be represented by a different painting. With some luck and skill, this group of paintings, or series of paintings, will then complete an enhanced visual story that would captivate viewers. Think big and work hard but have some fun too! That’s my mantra for this year - after all it is called ARTWORK!
Happy Painting!
