Plein Air
Painting "En Plein Air" or outdoors, is one of the best ways I know to improve one's skills on this journey of becoming a better artist. It is not easy at first, but the rewards are many.
The challenges, among others, include learning to mix accurate colours of the landscape; feeling and representing the atmospheric mood of a location - time of day or season; capturing the fleeting effects of light and shadow; drafting accurate shapes and forms; and immersing oneself in the energy of the environment.
As an artist inspired by nature in all its forms, the best painting experiences begin when I am outside directly observing the scenery that I love.
