‘Seeing slowly’ is a valuable habit for an artist. Inspiration is everywhere, from beautiful views to the fallen leaves at my feet. I take my time, absorbing the energy, colour, details, and mood of my surroundings. I sense the harmony and relationships between the things I see and think about the colours I might use to invoke the right mood.
We are blessed to live on Vancouver Island, a temperate rainforest on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Our environment is lush and green. We have snow on the high mountains in the winter, including a few days of it in the city, but this is a Canadian paradise of relatively mild temperatures with green plants and forests year round. Ireland is famous for its landscape’s many colours of green, but the same could be said about the multitude of green hues in our landscape too. I may be biased, but I think there are spectacular vistas everywhere, some of them are right in our own back yards. I am looking for just such a scene to capture in my new painting.
As a landscape artist, I love colour mixing, adding just the right amounts of blue, yellow and red paints – the primary colours, together to make the exact greens I am looking at. Success requires an understanding of the qualities of your painting medium, good observation skills, and lots of practice mixing colours, Take a moment to enjoy seeing slowly today.
Good Health and Happy Painting!
