Making my way along a rocky beach, I spied a large seal swimming very close to the shoreline. As I quietly sat and watched him effortlessly swim and dive, and return to the surface multiple times, he suddenly stopped and looked directly at me. Our eyes met, and we stared at each other for what seemed a long time. Then suddenly, he was gone. I felt blessed to be in such a beautiful place and to receive this gift of a rare moment of connection between species. As I continued to sketch the rocks and beyond, I relaxed into the tranquility and enjoyment of my art adventure.
These chance encounters with wildlife happen to me quite often. I think it is a facet of inviting the natural environment to fill your soul. It is absorbing the light and energy from the intimate details of nature and the spectacular scenery, and from living “in the moment.” As I eagerly shared this experience with my brother, who deeply appreciates nature, I learned that he also enjoys the same good fortune! Unknown to me, these moments of enchantment planted seeds. Over time, they have been germinating and recently launched my enthusiasm to add wildlife to my painting subjects. It is my value of, and connection to other species, that warms my heart and motivates me to share with others.
Art adventures facilitate a joyous way of seeing the world. Slowing the pace of our lives helps us to really get to know the essence of our planet and ourselves. If we take the time, who can predict how our senses will respond to the sights, sounds, smells, touch, and taste of life’s journey?
