Art Adventures - by Patricia Banks© Published September 2020 in Nanaimo Magazine and Voyager Mag “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity” said Albert Einstein. It is easy enough to fritter our precious time away, which each of us at times, can attribute to a million different things. But it is what we do with our time that counts; specifically, how we manage our time to do the things that are important to us; this is what really matters. I admit, the difficulties of these last few months of living with a “new normal” have completely diverted my attention and focus. Time has flown out the window and my usual routines and productivity have gone with it. Awareness of this shift is the first step in regaining some sort of balance. I am putting a plan in place to reset my energy and goals. This is the “opportunity” part of Albert Einstein’s statement. Yesterday, I began. Adhering to social distancing practices, our small plein air painting group scattered along a local sun-drenched beach and drew and painted outdoors in unison. Paper and pencils with me, inspiration took hold as a myriad of new subjects and ideas presented themselves. An anchored cargo ship sat peacefully on the pale blue horizon flanked by treed islands, various boats draped in white sails drifted along, small groups of adults and children waded through tidepools combing the sand for treasures, a child’s bright red bucket sat slightly tipped, next to three turrets of a sand castle, and crows and seagulls exchanged remarks as they sat on the bleached driftwood. The tide was low, so the sands stretched out to meet the shallow waters that made very little effort to splash. It was a perfect day by any account. Observations and drawings completed; a great feeling of accomplishment came from time well spent! Stay safe, and good health to all! Cheers, Patricia
