Notes from Zion “the promised land”...
The next day we toured Zion National Park by car to get our bearings and see some of the sights. The weather was unpredictable and raining heavily at times. This didn’t diminish the awesome beauty of the area, but it did make hiking a little risky, so we waited until better weather the following day.
We were able to enjoy plenty of hiking although some of the trails were closed due to flash flood warnings. As always, there is never enough time to do everything, leaving us wanting to return another time!
People have lived in and roamed these canyons and deserts for many thousands of years tracking animals such as camels and mammoths, which died out about 8000 years ago. For the following 1500 years, the Ancestral Puebloans farmed the area and subsequently the Southern Paiute people thrived here. Westward expansion in the 1860’s brought the Mormon pioneers with their dedication to hard work and religion.
We covered a lot of territory and really enjoyed hiking and spending time together. There was a picture postcard vista at every turn – a painter’s dream! Now on to Bryce Canyon National Park …
